“I genuinely didn’t think I was going to win,” Jessie J says when she’s asked about her unprecedented victory on the Chinese talent show Singer earlier this year. “I don’t think it’s sunken in yet.”

The British pop star has just finished a whirlwind three-month stint in Changsha for the filming of Singer, a Hunan TV reality competition featuring established singers similar to the X Factor.

Jessie J was one of the first foreign contestants on the hit talent show, performing alongside some of the biggest artists in China, including Taiwan singers Sam Lee and Angela Chang, as well as Beijing rocker Wang Feng.

“It felt like being on a really cool version of the Hunger Games,” Jessie J tells That’s in an interview one week after the April finale. “Everything [in Changsha] felt really epic. It’s like nowhere else I’ve ever been.”

After turning heads back at home for competing on the show, the 30-year-old platinum pop star and former judge of The Voice ended up winning the contest with nearly half of the audience vote. Her heartfelt rendition of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ earned her top marks in the finale, which hundreds of millions of viewers tuned in to watch. That night, she became the first foreign singer to take the crown.

“It was amazing for me to be on the other side, to not be the coach but to be the person that was competing,” Jessie J says of her appearance on the show. “It taught me a lot about how I’ve been with contestants on The Voice in the UK and Australia, and how I could improve as a coach and contestant. I genuinely feel like I got to know myself more in the process. I’ve definitely improved as a singer.”

Becoming a musician, particularly outside of the cultural epicenter of the United States, is an ill-advised undertaking. For foreign artists, breaking out of your home nation is a feat as difficult and perilous as the journey of Icarus —and those who do reach the American market often don’t have the staying power to prevent them from flying too close to the sun and combusting before their time.

Jessica Ellen Cornish is none such artist. After she was overlooked in her native U.K., the musical theater alum sought a recording contract in the U.S. and found it as Jessie J — a stage name she still can’t explain. Rising to prominence by writing for the likes of Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus (the irony is not lost on many that a recent import wrote Cyrus her first-ever hit, a song about feeling out of place in Los Angeles but partying the night away regardless) before releasing her first chart-topper as a solo act: “Do It Like A Dude,” a track she intended for Rihanna. Since, the now 30-year-old has become a household name, offering many more pop staples — from “Price Tag” to “Bang Bang” to the Pitch Perfect-adopted “Flashlight” — but it’s 2009 Jessie J, with her smoky eyeshadow, enormous silver hoop earrings, and now-famous jet-black bob, showcasing her inconceivable range in YouTube videos filmed in her bathroom that her fans revere most.

It seems that Jessie J — wide-eyed and wise beyond her years — has returned. For the first time in four years, Jessie has released a new full-length project, or an album that was “never meant to be an album.” R.O.S.E is a collection of four mini-EPs, each letter forming an acrostic poem to touch on the most fundamental elements of human nature and, according to Jessie, a “personal achievement.” The singer wails, whispers and vocally gyrates her way through Realizations, Obsessions, Sex and Empowerment, effortlessly elevated by each record’s soulful and unerringly slick production.

The English singer and songwriter Jessie J will perform in AFAS Live on Monday 3 December. The announcement follows shortly after the release of her new album ROSE The ticket sale for the concert starts next Friday, July 20th at 10:00 AM.

At the end of May, Jessica Cornish, better known as Jessie J, released her fourth studio album ROSE. For four days each day one of the four parts of the album was released, including the singles ‘Real Deal’ and ‘Queen’. The talented singer is very grateful and happy with the album and says: “The songs on ROSE are simply me singing my diary in a melody”.

Jessie J broke through in 2011 with song ‘Price Tag’, from platinum debut album ‘Who You Are’ and has since had several hits with songs like ‘Domino’ and ‘Do It Like a Dude’. The popular singer is not only on stage, she also raises her talents behind the scenes: she wrote songs for other great artists like Miley Cyrus and Justin Timberlake.

With the combination of her crazy voice, catchy dancepop and soulful ballads, Jessie J knows how to make a big impression and is a welcome guest in the Netherlands. Earlier this year she gave a beautiful performance at Pinkpop, where she blew the audience with her lucid soul voice and background band.

“It’s all about the fun and ease with which Jessie J brings her songs. Her background singers are not in the background, but they dance along with her. Meanwhile, Jessie J easily sings the roof tiles. ” – Thus 3VOOR12 about her show at Pinkpop

Tickets available here from Friday!
