The Voice Kids is set to return this June and there’s a new kid on the block as Jessie J takes up a big red chair to join returning coaches, Will.i.am, Pixie Lott and Danny Jones. The foursome will be seen together for the first time when the promo heralding the start of the new series debuts on ITV tomorrow evening (Saturday 11th May).

Back for a third series, talented youngsters will now have four coaches to try and impress as they sing for the star panel. Also, for the first time, young performers can enter the contest as a duo. Each coach will be looking for stars of the future, aged 7-14, to fill the nine spots on their teams when the series commences with the Blind Auditions next month.

A huge star-studded line-up has been announced for the second year of GroceryAid’s Barcode Festival in London.

Global chart-topping pop musician Jessie J is to headline, with double Brit Award winning electronic duo Basement Jaxx and Radio 1 staple DJ Nick Grimshaw also performing.

The event, at Hawker House in London on 4 July will raise money to support those in need from throughout the UK grocery industry, from the shop to the factory.

40 wholesalers, retailers and suppliers sponsored the event last year, including Bestway, Booker, Mars Wrigley, Waitrose, Morrisons, Tesco, Coca-Cola and Carlsberg. GroceryAid said “very many” of these firms had confirmed sponsorship of this year’s event.

Last year’s event raised more than £250,000 for the good cause.

Steve Barnes, CEO, GroceryAid commented, “Last year numerous companies used Barcode tickets as a team incentive or reward. I’m convinced this year’s amazing line-up will encourage even more grocery colleagues to ensure they get to join the party.”

Tickets to the event, which include all food and drink, cost £300.

After exiting the grown-up version of The Voice UK in 2013, Jessie J is heading back to her spinning chair for a second turn (if you’ll pardon the pun), becoming a coach on the new series of youthful spin-off (if you’ll pardon another pun) The Voice Kids.

But one fellow coach admits he was initially doubtful as to whether the fiercely talented (and generally fierce) singer was the right choice to mentor youngsters…

Speaking to RadioTimes.com and other journalists at the press launch for the eighth series of The Voice UK, will.i.am – who spent two series alongside Jessie on the main show – explained, “At first I was like, ‘Is Jessie going to be mean to these kids?’

“Jessie’s like a bootcamp singer. She’s like ‘hit the notes, you’ve got to hit the notes right, lay down, do this’. I was like, ‘Is she going to be as tough on these little kids? Is she going to say that to a seven-year-old?’”

However, the 43-year-old producer was left surprised at the Do It Like A Dude singer’s gentler side with the younger contestants.

“She’s such a freaking sweetheart to the kids,” he said. “She’s a sweetheart, oh my God. She’s going to be an awesome mum. I love the fact she’s doing the show because the UK is going to see the sweeter side of Jessie J. When she did the show before, she was tough.”

Jessie’s return to the show comes after she won an X Factor style singing show in China in April last year – something that stunned Will.

“She shared with me her China experience,” he explained. “She just wanted to push herself. I asked who her vocal coach was, and she said she was her own vocal coach. I asked if she was as tough as she was on The Voice as she is on herself! She got two billion freaking fans watching her. It’s crazy.”

The Voice UK returns on Saturday 4th January at 8pm on ITV. The Voice Kids returns to ITV later this year

Jessie J is returning to The Voice UK, as ITV has announced the singer will be a coach for the 2019 series of spin-off The Voice Kids UK.

Filming for the third series begins this week, with will.i.am, Pixie Lott and Danny Jones all back for another year. Jessie was part of the coaches line-up for the first two series of the main show in 2012 and 2013, back when it was on BBC One. Jessie’s return to the franchise sees her reunite with will.i.am.

“I love kids, I love to sing, and I love to share all I know about singing and performing,” she said. “The idea of combining those three things again on The Voice Kids is a dream come true. I am grateful to have been asked back. I am so excited to share my experience with the young singers on the show, who are just starting to discover themselves as singers.”

She added: “I will be protective of their experience emotionally as well as vocally. It’s a huge moment in their lives, and I am happy I get to be someone to help and hold their hand.

“It’s a fun and awesome panel to be joining. I love Pixie and Danny, and I can’t wait to be sitting alongside my friend Will. Let’s go!”

will.i.am added: “Jessie will add a new dynamic as we each compete to secure the freshest new talent in Britain to our teams.”

The 2019 Kids series will also allow duos to enter.

Petridis: Kojey, you’re a rapper – it’s traditionally hard for a British artist working in your genre to break the US. Are you bothered about success over there?

Faith: I think China is where it’s at. Jessie J felt the UK and America had turned their backs on her, so she went to China and entered a TV talent contest and she won it. She sold 12m tickets to tour China afterwards. She’s making more money than anyone around this table and nobody ever hears about it.
