Women in Music, which will run until September 3, charts the stories of successful female artists who have made ground-breaking impact in the music world.
The exhibition is split into three sections, highlighting the most inspirational stories from female superstars of the past, the present and on our very own doorstep in Leeds.
The exhibition is brought to the city by Leeds City Museums and Galleries in collaboration with Getaway Girls, an organisation in Harehills which helps women aged 11 to 25 to develop confidence, build valuable life skills and take positive risks in an environment which offers co-operation and support.
Beginning with the household names of the 1940s, the past section shines the spotlight on female stars including Winifred Atwell and Nina Simone. The present section looks at the glittering careers of artists like Beyoncé, Jessie J and Paloma Faith. Getaway Girls are encouraging young women to aspire towards rising local artists in the final section of the exhibition, including Ingi Hughes, Fuzzy Jones and Christella Litras.
This exhibition is guaranteed to hit the right note and provide the perfect inspiration for the soundtrack to your summer, so don’t miss it.
